Founded in 1834 as a school for Medicine and Surgery, the University of Newcastle also encompasses Armstrong College, which dates back to 1871. These large Newcastle colleges merged in 1937 to form King's College, now known as the University of Newcastle. With continual expansion and development, Newcastle University's facilities are constantly improved, including new building programmes, a £5 million sports hall, and considerable investment to the university's infrastructure.
