Newcastle Art Galleries

(Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England, UK)

Newcastle has rapidly become a city of culture and vibrancy, with many art museums and intimate galleries reflecting this status. Particularly notable in Newcastle is the Buddle Arts Centre on Station Road, which is a Grade-II listed building and formerly operated as a primary school, before being used as an exhibition venue for art, music and theatrical productions.

Just a short distance from Newcastle and opened in the summer of 2002, the acclaimed Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art stands right next to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, where international contemporary pieces of the highest standard are showcased. Each year, the Baltic gallery attracts well in excess of 500,000 visitors and continues to offer a variety of changing exhibitions. In 2007, the learning centre named the 'Quay' opened in the Baltic gallery, being designed to allow visitors to interact with the art works more closely.
