Newcastle Markets

Visitors to Newcastle will be able to spend their money at a large and impressive selection of markets, both covered and outdoors. On a rainy day, the indoor Grainger Market may well be of interest, being located within a Grade-1 listed building dating back to 1835 and known for its assortment of clothing, collectables and food.

For local produce, the Farmers' Market takes place each month on the first Friday and proudly boasts that all of its produce (meat, cheese, jams, chutneys and more) originates from within a 50-mile / 80-km radius of Newcastle city. Each Sunday, the Quayside Market fills with local traders, coming here to sell everything from handmade jewellery and paintings, to other crafts, plants, flowers and confectionary. Many historic buildings and Victorian warehouses are to be found around the Quayside area and nearby, such as the English-Heritage Bessie Surtees' House, St. Nicholas Cathedral and the Guildhall - now home to a convenient tourist office.

Each year in late November and early December, Newcastle now plays host to a popular Continental Market, which is based along Grey Street, Grainger Street and around the Grey's Monument. Soon after, towards the beginning of December, the Christmas Market offers an undeniable festive charm and is a great place to pick up some presents for Christmas, being situated in the same place and also on Old Eldon Square.

Armstrong Bridge Market

Located in the Jesmond area of Newcastle-upon-Type, the Armstrong Bridge Market is full of stalls and actually stands on the bridge itself. Located in the heart of the city, the Farmers' Market attracts local farmers from all around Tyne and Wear, selling a wide range of produce, much of which is organic. With fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, sausages, fish, cheeses, bread, cakes and much more besides, this is certainly one of the most popular and cheapest places to purchase local produce. Nearby you will find the Monument train station.

Quayside Market

With more than 100 stalls selling the latest fashions, vintage clothes, second-hand books, music, paintings, antiques, snack food, collectors' items and general bric-a-brac, Quayside is always busy and located conveniently close to the Central Station.

Situated in the Tynemouth area of the city, the Tynemouth Flea Market attracts large crowds. Grainger Market, in the city centre, has an enormous selection of food stalls. Selling a wide range of local delicacies, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, confectionary items, snack foods and much more besides, the Grainger is an indoor market and also features many small shops nearby. Of note, the Monument metro station is within walking distance, as well as the Blackett Street bus station.

Greenmarket
