Newcastle ChurchesNewcastle is a city with many beautiful churches and places of worship. St. Nicholas Cathedral is amongst the grandest and this Church of England cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Newcastle, with origins going all the way back to 1080 AD.

St. Mary's Cathedral is also of great note in Newcastle and is one for the Roman Catholics, with its spire towering high above the surrounding buildings, making this Grade I listed building one of the city's tallest structures. Visitors should look out for the adjacent Monument Garden, which honours Cardinal Basil Hume and was officially opened in 2002 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Parish Church of St. Andrew enjoys a very central setting, being close to many of the city's biggest attractions, such as the Newcastle United FC Stadium, Leazes Park, the News Theatre and the shopping centres of Eldon Garden, Eldon Square and Newgate.

St. Nicholas Cathedral can be found in the city centre and was built around 500 years ago on the site of a historic, Norman church. Most famous for its historic 'Lantern Tower', St. Nicholas Cathedral actually became a cathedral in the late 19th century and attractions include many original period features, a medieval window and detailed architecture. St. Nicholas Cathedral is situated close to the Central Station and holds regular services.
Open hours: Monday to Friday - 07:00 to 18:00, Saturday - 08:00 to 16:00, Sunday - 07:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 19:00

St. Mary's Cathedral

The wonderful St. Mary's Cathedral was built in the mid-19th century and is a Roman Catholic cathedral. With a spectacular, vast church spire, which dominates the skyline, St. Mary's is situated in central Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Other attractions include detailed stonework, a large interior, many carvings and a café area.

St. Andrew's Church

St. Andrew's Church is situated in the heart of Newcastle city centre and dates back almost 700 years. Full of history and many original features, highlights include the historic Chancel Archway, stained-glass windows, paintings and a detailed, stone font. St. Andrews is within comfortable walking distance of the Haymarket train station.

All Saints Church

Located within the trendy Quayside district, the All Saints Church is a spectacular church, complete with a tall spire and impressive architecture. Dating back to medieval times, All Saints was rebuilt in the late 19th century and attractions include many stained-glass windows, stone and woodcarvings, parish services and spectacular views across the nearby river and Quayside area. Of note to travellers, the Monument train station is conveniently close by.
